Modernized TCM formula for depression-like symptoms such as those of burnout*

XIOYA° 5 Ease is registered in the Netherlands as a traditional herbal medicine (Xiaoyao Ease Pill) under the Traditional Use Registration (TUR) procedure. *It is indicated for the relief of symptoms of mental stress and exhaustion, including low mood and decreased appetite. The classic TCM Xiaoyao formula has been established in Asia for centuries and is also used by European naturopaths and physicians to treat mental stress.

The simplified formula of the more than 850-year-old traditional recipe consists of 90 mg of extract from the combination of large-headed saliva plant (Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz) and white peony root (Paeonia lactiflora Pall) as well as 320 mg of extract from the combination of Chinese angelica root (Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels), Chinese hare's ear (Bupleurum Chinese DC) and licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra L. and/or Glycyrrhiza inflate Bat. and/or Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch).

Burn-out -Increasing global health burden
Burnout has developed into an increasingly relevant global health problem in recent decades. Originally described as a work-related syndrome, burnout is now recognized as a state of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced performance, arising primarily in the context of chronic work-related stress. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified burnout as a work-related phenomenon in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), underscoring its growing importance in public health policy.
The global prevalence of burnout is steadily increasing, closely linked to structural changes in the world of work. Globalization, digitalization, and rising demands for flexibility and availability have led to an intensification of work-related stress. Particularly in highly developed industrialized nations, but also in emerging economies, a growing number of employees report chronic stress, overwork, and insufficient recovery periods. These developments contribute significantly to the increasing strain. Burnout prevention requires a multidimensional approach that includes both individual and organizational measures. At an individual level, stress management strategies, resilience building and sufficient recovery periods play a central role.
Network Pharmakologie

Network pharmacology enables the systematic analysis of complex mechanisms of action of multicomponent drugs by investigating interactions between active ingredients, targets, and signaling pathways. Recent studies on "XIAYO 5 Elements" show that this formulation addresses similar molecular targets to the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula Xiaoyao. In particular, targets associated with stress regulation, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, and neuroinflammatory processes have been identified. This suggests potential benefits for burnout and mental stress.
